I received the S&W M&P 340 yesterday at my FFL, unboxed it and marveled at how light it was...and got a little fearful at what a full load 357 would do to me with so little mass to absorb the recoil. I had brought some 38 SPL (125 gr), 38 SPL +P (125 gr), and 357 (158 gr) ammo with me so I immediately went to the range and loade up 5 regular pressure 38s...I fired off all 5 and the recoil was not a problem at all and I put all 5 in the black. I went to low-light conditions and loaded 5 more, used the CT laser and was amazed at how well it helped me with my control as the trigger stages prior to the hammer dropping...put all 5 again in the black. I loaded 5 +P rounds and it was a bit "snappier" but still very manageable recoil. Now I put the full-load 357s in the little J-frame and squeezed off the first round...Wow...A whole different experience but amazingly still manageable. I shot all 5 rounds and I could feel it in my hand but not bad...Now if I was shooting 20 rounds in fast succession I'd be singing a different tune but as a defensive, very concealable handgun I will be carrying it with 357s, but doing extended range-work with 38 +Ps. The fit and finish of the M&P 340 is spectacular and the trigger is very smooth, but a little heavy. The CT grips offer a a great shock absorber around the web of your hand and the Tritium front post and "gutter snipe" type rear site work better than the open sights on my HK and Glock autos...simply a phenomenal pistol that doesn't shoot like a 2" snubbie...A lot of firepower in a very, very small and light package. Highly recommend.
